Scripts Don’t Make You Robotic. They Make You Steady.

Difficult conversations at work go better when your words are ready before emotions rise.

When stakes are high, it is easy to ramble, soften too much, or say something you did not mean. Scripts do not remove humanity. They create structure, so you can stay clear and calm when it matters most.

Why Scripts Help in Difficult Conversations at Work

Scripts:

A Short Script to Open a Tough Meeting

Use this when you need to set tone and structure right away:

“Thank you for meeting today. I want to be respectful of your time and clear about the purpose of this conversation. My goal is to walk through the decision, the next steps, and what support is available. I will pause for questions at the end.”

This Week’s Move

Write two short scripts:

  1. One for opening a tough conversation

  2. One for setting a boundary

Then practice them out loud once. You are training steadiness, not perfection.

FAQs

  • Do scripts make me sound unnatural? Not if they sound like you. Keep them short, use your natural language, and practice once or twice.

  • When should I use a script? When emotions are high, stakes are real, or you tend to over-explain.

  • What if the conversation goes off script? That is normal. The script is your anchor. You can return to it to regain clarity.

Coach’s note
